If you’re dreaming about a waterfront celebration filled with sunshine, happy tears, and champagne toasts, this summer wedding at The Bohlin in Newport is going to be your thing.
Andrew and Ian were married on a picture-perfect mid-July day at The Bohlin. They got ready together beforehand at Hammetts Hotel — and honestly, it felt like Newport showed up specifically for them. Blue skies. Boats drifting by. That salty harbor breeze that makes everyone feel just a little more alive.
As a documentary wedding photographer, these are the kinds of days I love most: relaxed, meaningful moments, and couples who are fully present with their people.
Andrew and Ian got ready at Hammetts Hotel, which is just steps from the marina. The vibe was calm but buzzing — music playing, friends popping in and out, final outfit adjustments happening in between laughter.
One of my favorite parts of the afternoon? Watching them help each other with the finishing touches. There’s something incredibly grounding about that kind of quiet teamwork before everything officially begins. No rush. No stress. Just two people choosing each other.
Those candid, in-between moments tell the real story — the deep breath before heading downstairs, the quick hand squeeze, the “okay, this is happening” smiles.
Guests were welcomed with champagne right on the pier at The Bohlin. And if you’ve never experienced Newport harbor in July… just trust me. It’s magic.
Incredible sail boats floated past. Sunglasses were on. Hugs were happening everywhere you looked.
Starting with a champagne welcome set the tone for the entire evening — celebratory, relaxed, and fully outdoors. It felt less like a formal event and more like the best summer party you’ve ever been invited to.
At 5:30, everyone gathered at the end of the pier for the ceremony.
There is something wildly special about a waterfront ceremony at The Bohlin. The harbor becomes your backdrop. The light bounces off the water. The breeze keeps things comfortable even in mid-July.
Andrew and Ian’s ceremony was heartfelt, personal, and sprinkled with laughter. Christian – their dear friend, gave an incredible speech. Ian’s uncle read from the Supreme Court decision legalizing gay marriage. EVERYONE cried happy tears – even the folks gathered, watching from their yacht nearby.
From a documentary wedding photographer’s perspective, it was a dream: big reactions, tight embraces, spontaneous cheers as they walked back down the aisle.
By 7:00, guests moved under the sailcloth tent for the reception. If you’ve ever attended a wedding at The Bohlin in Newport, you know the tent glows once the sun starts to dip.
Dinner flowed into speeches, and speeches flowed into raucous dancing. The energy built naturally — no awkward transitions, no forced moments. Just friends and family fully invested in celebrating Andrew and Ian.
At 7:45, we snuck away for sunset photos — and Newport absolutely delivered.
The sky turned soft and golden over the harbor, wrapping everything in that dreamy July light. Andrew and Ian were relaxed, glowing (literally and emotionally), and fully in the moment.
Sunset portraits at The Bohlin are always stunning, but what made these special was how natural they felt. No stiff posing. No over-direction. Just the two of them walking along the dock, leaning into each other, laughing about something I’ll never know — which honestly makes the photos even better.
A few things made this day especially seamless:
Andrew and Ian’s wedding was joyful, intentional, and completely them.
If you’re planning your own The Bohlin Newport Summer wedding and you care more about feeling your day than performing it, documentary-style photography might be exactly what you’re looking for. The best moments aren’t staged — they unfold naturally when you’re surrounded by your favorite people, in a place that already feels magical.
And if there’s champagne on a pier involved? Even better. 🥂
